Chap. 2. Of the Ephelides in Women with Child.
Here is another kind of thefe Epbelides chat
with Child 5; and it hach its original from the Menftruous blood retained 5 which (in regard that for che moft parc from che {aid retention ic contraéteth a great deal of vitioutnefs) is wontco excite in Women great with Child divers fymp- toms, as likewife thefe {pots in the Face bred from a vicious humor thruft forch thither. |
Buc now and chen nocwithftanding Nitgins | and Women that are not wich Child have chefe| kind of {pots breaking forth in cheir Faces, if in| the time of their monthly Menftruous flux they |
eacthofe kind of meats that (asthey fay) have in them a power of coloring ; {uch as are che Car-
vot Roors, and che red Beets, and che like, which
(as we are taught by Experience) do breed and bring forth thefe kind of Spots. Signs Diagnoftick.
Thefe Epbelides in Women with Child are known , inthat they are dark and duskith {pots, appearing more efpecially in the Forehead, and deforming it, and {preading chemfelves both in length and breadth 5 and oftentimes they equal in
length the palm of che hand, but they are void of al kind of coughnefs. The Prognoftick:
The Epbelides in Women are a fign of their Conception, (as we cold you before out of THip- pocrates his Tract of Women chat never have Children) and they are feldom or never cured ; and if haply chey be taken away yer chey foon return again, and wich fome they continue even unto the cime of cheir Delivery, and after that they vanifh, and in fome they likewife continue after theit Delivery 5 and in fome others they al- fo vanifh before chey are delivered (when the Child-is now become ftrong and vigorous) like as do other fymptoms that ufually infeft Women with Child in the beginning of cheir Concep- gion.
The Cure.
Indeed it is very requifice Chat the depraved humors (that arethe Antecedent Caufe of this Affect, and are wont co nourith the fame) fhould be evacuated 5 but in regard that in Women wich Child we may not fafely.make ufe of thofe evacu- ations, we ought cherefore to concent our felves with Topical Medicamentz. And here there js co be commended the ule of Bayberries, if cheir rinds becakenoff, andthen chey be beaten into a pou- der, and fomingled with Honey, and made into the form of an Unguenr, and che Face therewich anointed inaBath. Take the Fuyce that is preffed forth of the root of Buglofs fliced, and with it anoint the Spots.
Chap. 3. Of Lentigines, Pimples, or [pecks in the Face.
An hither belong likewife the Lentigines, BR which the Germans (from the color of dry Leaves) cal Sommer firoffen, Sommer flecken, and Lauf flecken 5 and they ace {pots in color relem- bling Lenciles, wich the which (in Women efpe- cially) the Face principally, and fomeimes like- wife the Hands, Arms, and upper pare of che Thorax being expofed unto the Air is afperfed and overfpread, they fomrimes ftanding thicker, and fomeimes thinner, like unto fo many drops,as it were, without any pain and trouble ; in, tore appearing indeed only in theSummercime, and vanifhing again in che Winter; and in fome like= wife they keep cheir courfe from yeer to yeer,
Lhe Caujes.
But now they have their original from aduft burnt blood feizing upon the Scarf-skin. And chishappeneth more efpecially in ruddy bodies, that are of a Cholerick temperature, and efpeci- ally inthe Summer time when that vapor of the bloodis more burnt., And hence ic is that in che Winter for che moft parc chefe {pots vanith, but then they return again and appear in che Summer, And they break forch chiefly in thofe parts chat are expofed unto the external Ambient Air, the Face, the Neck, the Hands, and the fuperior pare of the Thorax, becaufe chaz the Scarf-skin fs more burnt by the Sun, andthe Ambient Air de= tainech thofe burnt vapors inthe Skin. ‘Platerus is Of opinion, thac che Juyce chac fhould nour
