Platerus (as we alfo before told you, in the fecond Book of our Practife, Parc 1, Chap. 25. where we created of Struma) bath a pecu- har Opinion by bimfelf couching the Cautes of thefe Tumors.. For he thinkech chac thefe afore- faid Tumors are generated from excremesticicus humors ( for if any fuch thing fhould be genera- ted our of thefe kind of excrements, he conceiveth thac ircould not be fo ftableand firm, buc that it Would rather be obnoxious to putridnets and
corruption ) bur from an alimentary Juyce, co
wit, fuch as is by Nature ordained for the nouri- fhing of the parc. For if the humor be thicker than is convenient for. the nourifhing of a flefhy pare, then ( fatthhe ) ahardec fort of Tumors then are che Sarcomata are fomtimes produced and again, if chis humor be extraordinary thick, then a Scirrbus ispenerated. But if che Tumor be wor to hard, chen ina fhort timeicendech inan Impoftume, inthe which chére may be generated a different matter, according tothe difference and Variety of chisJuyce chat hath bred chisfumor,& the mingling therof wich ocher humors3which yec notwithitanding ts not fuppurated in like manner as other Impoftumes are that are bred from the Blood ;, neither is it curned into Pas, buc into a= nother kind of fubftance chat is included in a pro- per Membrane, or Bladder. And in this manner (as he writeth ) are generated ‘Melicerides, Atbe- romata, and Steatomata. But headdeth hkewile chat unto the generation of fuch like Tumors as thefe this conducech very much, to wit, if toge- ther with this Juyce that ought'ro nourifh che flefh, a portion of chat Nutrimentof fome other pare (chat oughe co be nourifhed’by an extraor- dinary chick Juyce_) departing from it, and be- ing carried intothe flethy feats together with their Nutriment, chere beget in them {uch an hardnefs, And chis be likewife endéavoreth co prove even by this Argument, to wir, that in thefe kind of Impoftumes bred from chofe Tumors chere is to befound fomching hike unto the fubftance of other parts refembling {omrimes Hair, fomcimes a Nail, fometimes a Bone, and now and then a Glandule3 which (faith he) couldnot wel any’ otherwile bebred, or produced trom any thing elfechen the
_ guyce nourithing thete parts, either in che Skin, or
inthe ficth neer unco ict, as being bicher brought & conveyed together with the proper Nutriment of the Fleth. And from the fame he conceivech chat it cometh to pals, ifac any cime there be found in an Impoftumeany thing chat refemblech a Beehive, a Pultile,or Hoseys thac this proceedech from the fatcer parc of che Blood, cthae caulech a facnefs3 and chis mdeed he conceiveth co be from che flefhy

Thefe things if chey beina pro= per and peculiar Membrane, then ¢ as be wriceth ) thefe alfo are bred from a Membranous Juyce pro= ceeding from hence,
But now, as touching this Opinion, there are certain things to be taken notice of. For ficft of al, it doth not yer from hence appear, what the. caufé is Why fuch like cumors as thete are noc bred in al bodies, neither yet in all parts, out of that Juyce by which they ate nourifked. And heteupon,; the Caufe shat is co be rendred’ why that humor floweth oucof the parts, and that thereupon a Tumor is excited under the Skin, I conceive to be this, thac che Membrane chat covereth any pare whatiOever, andencompaffeth ir, is (either by fome excetnal and violent, or elfe by fome internal Caufle ) either broken or corroded and eaten quire chrough, and exulcerated ( which inthe Genera= cion of Nodi or knots in che Bones, Platerus granceth chat 1% may fo happen in the Perioftim) fo chat the way and pafflage being opened, che ali- ment or nourifhing Juyce flowing forch isno lon= ger kept in and fhuc upan che parc affedét:d, but chat ic {weateth forth through this epen paflage. Which yer nocwithflanding Narure that is never idje permitteth not rafhly co be dones buc.i¢ be- ginnech further to excend the very: Membrane a felf, and to fhucup the Juyce flowirg forth; like as we fee it co be done in rees where(cheexcernal Bark beingcut_) theretsincthe very like mannera ‘Nodus or knot formed. And moreover, thatthe Juyce which affordeth matter untorhe Tumor 4¢ chiefly defined and ordeined for the nourifhing of the part, this I wil readily pramc5 buc yer Platerus bimfelf cannot deny but that in progrefs oftime vitious humors may be likewife driven forch thither. Neither is ac requifive chat ic fhould be immediately converted anto Pus 5 if repard thatthe vitious humors mingled together with thealiment may for along whileretain cheit own Nature, without any corruption, and con= verfion into Pus5 asitevidently appearech ia the Cachexy, and Scabies or Scabbinefs, and the like affects in the Skin, ButI very much doube ‘and queftion, wherher thac difference matter that #s toundin fuch Tumors hach its original from the proper aliment of the neer adjoyning parts, che Hairs, the Nails, aud che Bones, flowing together into fome other places and there minpling at felt with the proper aliment of the parc affected: Neicher is Macter fufficient, ox all that is required unto the formation of Hairs, Nails, Bones, and the like, luc firft of all, ‘and efpecially there is neceffarily required the formative facuicy, which in che flefhy pare tormeth Pieth, and inthe meme branous part a Membrane; and rot Bones Pon sheré
