X. 21. Ye cannot drink the cup of

the Lord and the cup of devils : ye cannot be partakers of tlie Lord's table and of the table of devils.

Q, 165. What is baptism?
A. Baptism is a sacrament of the New Testament, where- in Clirist hath ordained the washing with water in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost% to be a sign and seal of ingrafting into himself^, of remission of sins by his blood ^, and regeneration by his Spirit '' ; of

that time ye were without Christ, being aliens from the commonweahh of Israel, and strangers from the covenaBts of promise, having no hope, and without God in the world. Gen. xxxiv. 14. The like figure whereunto, even baptism, doth also now save us (not the put- ting away of the filth of the flesh, but the answer of a good conscience towards God) by the resurrection of Jesus Christ. Rom. ii. 28. For he is not a Jew which is one outwardly; neither is that circumcision which is outward in the flesh: Ver. 29. But he is a Jew which is one inwardly ; and circumcision is that of the heart, in the spirit, and not in the letter ; whose praise is not of men, but of God. 25

Q. 166. (Into ivhom is baptis^n to be administered?
A. Baptism is not to be administered to any that are out of the visible church, and so strangers from the covenant of promise, till they profess their faith in Christ, and obe- dience to him " ; but infants descending from parents, either both or but one of them professing faith in Christ, and obedience to him, are, in that respect, within the cove- nant, and to be baptized ^
