Chapter 82

SECTION III. — HISTORY. I07

Edelgeborne (Die) Jungfer Alchymia, etc. [Cont'd.]
Herrenstadt, 1730. pp. [xxiv]-424, i2mo.
Though bearing different imprints and titles, these two books are otherwise identical. The author conceals his name under the expression : ViCTRix Fortune SaPientia. My copy of the Ehren-Rettung bears the MS. note : " Hujus opus Author est Joannes Conradus Creiling." Schmieder regards this authorship as probable. The work is divided into five chap- ters, treating of (1) Whether the transmutation of metals be possible ? (2) Whether and where this has actually occurred ? (3) Experimental evi- dences of this transmutation. (4) Of the Universal Medicine, Potable Gold, etc. (5) Whether Alchemy is to be recommended to any persons, especially noble Lords. The second chapter contains much material for a history of alchemy of anecdotal character. This work is often quoted by Schmieder in his Geschichte der Chemie.
