A remarkable work, presenting in a systematic order the results of the labors of chemists during the period named, and indicating the sources of information. The authorities and literature are given as marginal notes, thus preventing interruption of the text.

Vol. 1 contains a chapter on the origin and earliest state of Chemistry and ■ Pharmacy (pp. 1-22), and a review of the labors of chemists in the first period (1S00-1806), pp. 695-722. The latter review is continued in vol. ' II, pp. 515-542. The author, an apothecary in Bernburg and member of learned societies, designed his work as a sequel to Gmelin's Geschichte der Chemie, and dedicated it to J. B. Trommsdorfl on the occasion of his fiftieth anniversary of chemical work. Vol. 11 contains special chap- ters on stoichiometry, and on various branches of applied chemistry. Bley's method combines the historical and the useful.
