In this interesting booklet the author, a Jesuit Professor of Mathematics at the College in Lyons, traces the history of experimentation on the increase in weight of metals by calcination, and shows that (i) they lose in sp. gr.; (2) the increase in weight cannot be caused by the addition of corpuscles of fire ; (3) the weight of the air does not contribute to the increase in weight of calcined bodies [!] ; and (4) finds the real cause of the phenomenon in the foreign bodies contained in the air. The author draws his conclusions from the labors of others, with the litera- ture of which he is quite familiar.

The author, who conceals his name under the pseudonym " Carbonarius," treats of the history of alchemy from the earliest times in 60 chapters. He gives, in closing, a chronological list of "adepts" ; another of fraudulent alchemists ; and a bibliography, comprising 634 titles, with annotations. The latter is chronologically arranged under three heads, and is quite good in its details.
