This work is dedicated to : " L'illustre et veneree memoire de Lavoisier indignement outrage par les chimistes AUemands Kolbe, Liebig et Volhard." This indicates its remarkable partisan character. The letters are in two series : the first, written in 1862-64, are devoted almost wholly to a defence of Lavoisier and his work ; the second series, written in 1871-74, defends the chemists of France and bitterly attacks Prus- sians. A long introduction sustains the controversial spirit of the author.
