The first treatise on the effects of so-called laughing gas. These researches were made between April, 1799, when Davy first breathed nitrous oxide, and the summer of 1800, when this work was issued. Dr. Thomson writes of this work : "It gave him at once a high reputation as a chemist, and was really a wonderful performance when the circumstances under which it was produced are taken into consideration." Davy was but twenty- one years of age at the time.
