BALARD, ANTOINE JEROME.
This French chemist, distinguished by his discovery of Bromine, seems not to have published any independent works. His announcement of Bromine is found in Ann. chim. pkys., xxxii, 1826.

" Baldwin's phosphorus," so-called, described in this work, is thought to be anhydrous calcium nitrate. " Romberg's phosphorus," discovered in 1693, was an oxychloride of calcium. " Canton's phosphorus," dis- covered in 1768, was calcium sulphide. " Brand's phosphorus," the elementary substance, was discovered in 1669.
